After reading an article blasting mineral make-up, I had to keep an open mind on whether or not mineral make-up is really all that much better. I remember the first time I had heard about it I was selling medi-spa equipment and products to plastic surgeons and dermatologists and I thought to myself, I had better try this stuff out for myself if they all seem to want to use and retail it. I don't use much foundation (opting for a cleaner more natural skin) so when I applied it and felt as though I was wearing no foundation, I was highly impressed. I also wanted to be sure that it did indeed work well for sensitive skin and acneic skin because I kept hearing how it is ideal for those skin types. I decided to send some to my daughter who had acneic skin and some to my mother who has sensitive skin. They both fell in love with it. I also wondered about its claim to be a good sunscreen and since I live near the beach I thought I'd try it out. I used it instead of my sunscreen and went on a long walk on the boardwalk. Not only did it work, I looked good because instead of a greasy feeling naked skin with a typical sunscreen, I was actually sporting a sun-kissed bronzed look. Needless to say I was sold. Still I had one more hurdle to clear. There are quite a few on the market; so which do I choose and recommend? I don't take recommending product lightly so I wanted to do some research. I decided to take a closer look at the bigger named mineral make-up brands and do some comparisons. I looked at many websites for insight (such as customer ratings, information, beauty editors comments, and so on) as well as asked many professionals in this field whom I've come to rely on after 25 years in the industry. Below is an easy to read chart of what I've learned:
Product TypeCompany offers everything from foundations, dazzling eye and lip colors to specialty products that target and treat swollen and puffy eyes.
Effectiveness & PriceExtremely effective for all day wear with flawless looking texture. Moderate to pricey but well worth it. The company offers kits with huge savings when compared to buying products individually.
RemarksGo with a kit that contains the "Line Tamer." Phenomenal results. Love the way it takes years off the face. Colorescience gets the Gold Medal.
Effectiveness & PriceFabulous broad-spectrum sunscreen! Easy to use and very effective. Great for with oily skin in particular seem to appreciate its residue free flawless matte finish. Not "drugstore priced," but well worth the extra cost.all skin types but those
RemarksSilver Medal goes to Peter Thomas Roth. This company is always at the cutting edge for effective products whether it is sunscreen or its tried and true therapeutic skincare line
Effectiveness & PriceEasy to use, "no mess" mineral makeup. Conceals, camouflages, and provides spf protection all in one. The word "airbrushed" in the name speaks volumes on the fabulous finish this make-up provides. Less expensive than some department store brands and considering all it does, it is an excellent value!
RemarksTied for the Silver Medal is Philosophy's Supernatural Airbrushed Canvas SPF. Incredible remarks from customers. Users say they will never use anything else. Covers well, no sheen, minimizes pores and protects skin. The ultimate multi-tasker.
Product NameBare Minerals
Product TypeOne of the original mineral make-up lines. Everything from foundation with spf to dazzling eye shadow colors.
Effectiveness & PriceBare minerals seems to have a huge following who love the product but complain about it being too messy. They have storefronts in malls, which helps you choose colors and try product. However shopping in the store as opposed to online specials can get pricey.
RemarksFavorite thing about Bare Minerals are their brushes and their Mineral Veil powder. Congrats Bare Minerals for taking the bronze medal!
Product NameJane Iredale
Product TypeFull spectrum of cosmetics from base to finishing touches
Effectiveness & PriceThis line has some really cool colors and is touted by the company to be one of the first makeup lines to have skin care benefits.
RemarksJust love their bronzer! I like this line but feel it may be a little too pricey in the competitive field of mineral makeup. Possibly because of its gorgeous packaging and because it is often sold in medical and medi-spa settings.
