Great Skincare Info Specific to Men! Part One!

Men are Babies! Just kidding! They’re just more practical when it comes to beauty! Let’s explore skincare and beauty products for men!

Having been in this business for many, many years the one thing I’ve noticed is that we (women) will take just about any amount of pain to be beautiful. Men, not so much! Don’t get me wrong, they love to look good; but when it comes down to really getting there (generally) they aren’t quite as compliant as the female gender. I will take a substantial amount of pain to obtain a goal when it comes to my skin and looks, but in my experience, the men I have treated over the years can’t take quite as much. Actually make that not even a fraction as much. Here’s an example. One time a male friend of mine commented on how radiant my skin looked and I told him that I had recently had a (mild to moderate) chemical peel. Basically, it was a tad stronger than a basic lunchtime peel that I’m sure most of your familiar with, although no where near as invasive as many are when treated in a controlled cosmetic surgeon or dermatology office. In a nutshell, he asked if I would do one on him. I said, “Sure” because I was well trained in using this particular peel. I remembered it was a tad painful, so I informed him well in advance. It was nothing I couldn’t take; but it definitely had some sting and pain to it. I took all the steps to prepare him for it (information, prep, etc.) and finally applied the actual step that does the actual deed and told him to mention if he became uncomfortable. What transpired, I did not expect. He started screaming, “Get it off of me! I can’t take the pain!” Of course I did remove it immediately but I learned that very day that we (women) will go the extra mile to be beautiful. This is where the saying “no pain, no gain,” as well as “if you don’t feel it, you may not be achieving it” really applies. Obviously there are plenty of exceptions to these sayings even in skincare, but in this case… (Sensitivities, allergies, side effects and contraindications aside) you gotta put up with the pain to achieve the results. It was a great learning experience because it became a fabulous source of experience for me when it came to counseling men in skincare. After chatting with him and many other men I found out a few things that I will never forget. Men want to look good, but they want it to be easy, specific to them (meaning packaging, their particular needs such as acne, anti-aging, cleansing, shaving, etc.) and they do not like to feel greasy or want the sensation of product sitting on their face. They want their face to feel clean and radiant (just as we do), they want it to be effective, they want very little scent or if it is fragrant it needs to be fairly masculine and they don’t like shine or an oily feeling. But even more important to them seems to be ease, comfort and affordability. They are much more practical when it comes to beauty. Remember they are from Mars! Just kidding guys! If I truly want to be honest to myself, you probably have it right on point!

We will explore some great products for you in the following blog entries. I will do my very best to take all of your needs and wants you have shared with me previously to make it specific to your gender. I will also be exploring shaving needs, hair care, body products and even treatments that will potentiate your skincare desires with as little discomfort as possible. Another little note I want to share with you is even though I will probably discuss products specifically formulated for men, there are indeed many brands that are not gender specific and work brilliantly as well. One of my favorite brands for both genders would most likely be Murad products!
