All Things Botox- History, Benefits, and Safety

When most of us think of Botox, we think of the injections for relaxing fine lines and wrinkles, particularly the lines on our foreheads and around our eyes. But that’s only one small way (of the many ways) the toxin is used therapeutically. Botox actually has many uses and was used long before the use for aesthetic purposes (what we know as Botox Cosmetic) that we typically think of today. But since we here at Beauty Research write about beauty and skin care it’s pretty much a given that when we speak of Botox we’re simply using the term in general for most muscle relaxing cosmetic uses, as opposed to the many other therapeutic medical uses it can treat. So for the purposes of my writings I will be speaking about its use, in terms of, aesthetics.

Botox Cosmetic injections are injected into specific sites about the face depending on the muscles (and wrinkles) one wishes to relax and smooth.  The rationale being, if the muscles are relaxed and at rest, then the skin around the area looks smoother, much more rested and relaxed as well.

This particular use of Botox has been around for about ten years and has become wildly popular for those of us seeking ageless beauty and desirous of the latest in anti-aging skin care. The boom has become so widespread and sought after that it’s actually projected to be about a 3 billion dollar industry by 2018.

But like many things that seem too good to be true, Botox (which is considered to be very safe in general) also has its pitfalls. Side effects can certainly happen and the patient should be well informed before undergoing the treatment. In addition to potential side effects (which can range from temporary eye drooping to severe allergic and life-threatening reactions), Botox injections are expensive with prices ranging from about $8 to $13 per unit or about $200 per area. So if one has their crow’s feet, frown lines and brow lines treated, the procedure would cost in the neighborhood of about $600. And the results are only temporary lasting approximately 3 to 4 months.

I have found that for the most part my history with Botox injections has been positive and I’m usually thrilled with my results; however, I have indeed witnessed some mishaps along the way. I look at Botox as a nice alternative every now and then, or for perhaps a special occasion. But in general, I prefer to use outstanding professional cumulative skin care regimens and products to keep my skin looking youthful and radiant. I know that many men and women say their choice is indeed Botox and I have to admit it is pretty darn cool…but I still feel my choice has to be professional skin care products!
