Probiotics-A Natural Remedy for Digestive Health

By now most of you have probably heard many people singing the praises of probiotics. Probiotics are a group of microorganisms that are the same as, or very similar to, the bacteria in our gut. Just as antibiotics fight harmful bacteria, probiotics are often used to support and maintain good bacteria, thus are said to promote good health. Probiotics are available in some dairy foods as well as by supplemental form, such as capsules, tablets, liquids and powders. You’re probably already familiar with yogurts such as Activia which are said to contain live cultures and microorganisms in order to help regulate the digestive system. And there are a number of other probiotic-rich foods (as well as supplements) that are also becoming wildly celebrated and claim to aid in good digestive health.

Probiotics have become a very popular way to regulate one's digestive system. However, oftentimes the number of bacterium found in probiotics supplements isn’t sufficient for doing the job that those that are high in numbers may do, as well as may not be specific to the needed micro-organism. Additionally, when used for maintaining a healthy digestive system, they can be destroyed by the gut, thus preventing them to do their job. However, many studies, many medical professionals and many people do indeed validate their use as well as their effects. But keep in mind that even though probiotics are a natural way to promote digestive health, there can be and have been serious side effects reported, particularly when used by those with compromised immune systems. It is important that everyone consult with their doctor before starting probiotic therapy.

Many people use probiotic therapy with great success for aiding in digestive health and for balancing the normal flora. Probiotics are a natural way to promote digestive health but serious digestive issues should be directed to a physician. It is crucial to remember that even though these “friendly bacteria” seem to have a place for promoting optimal digestive health and maintenance, they are certainly not a substitute for medical care.

If it turns out that probiotics are a good choice for you…it may not be long before you too are singing the praises of these good little germs!
