Smooth it out – How to Create a Lump Free Silhouette

There's nothing worse than slipping into an outfit you've been dying to wear and looking in the mirror to find bulges staring back at you. No matter what your size, you may find yourself looking lumpy in an outfit, but there are some things that you can do to smooth your silhouette and battle the bulge.

1. Invest in Good Shapewear- Shapewear is made to control the bulges that you wish to hide, but not all shapewear is created equal. Look for products made by top lingerie companies and take time to read reviews about how well they actually work. You should also own more than one type of shapewear as different outfits require control in different places. At the minimum, make sure you have a bodysuit style shaper for complete control and a high-waisted panty shaper to contour the lower body.

2. Switch to Thigh Highs - If you get bulges around your middle, it's time to rethink those control top pantyhose. While this type of hosiery does suck in the lower abdomen, the pressure from the control top can actually cause rolls around the midsection. Use shape-wear to flatten a lower abdominal paunch and switch to thigh highs to avoid the middle roll.

3. Get Fitted for a Bra - Studies show the majority of women are wearing the wrong bra size, and if your bra is too tight or too loose, you may develop rolls along your back or under your chest. Visit a boutique, lingerie shop or department store and get professionally measured for a bra. You'll be amazed at the lump-fighting impact of wearing a perfectly sized undergarment.

4. Don't Shop by Size - Trying to squeeze into pants, jeans or a skirt that is too small is a surefire way to end up with lumps. Every brand has its own sizing, and even within one collection, pieces can be shaped differently, resulting in a lack of universal sizes. This makes size an arbitrary number. There's no shame in having to buy a Size 8 instead of a Size 6 or a Size 16 instead of a Size 12 because size really is meaningless. You'll look better in your clothing if you get real about your size and choose the one that fits.

5. Layer Wisely - With winter coming, many ladies will be layering, but if you're not smart about how you pair your pieces, you could end up with bulges. If you get bulges around your waist, don't wear a long-sleeve tee beneath a sweater that falls at the exact same place on your body. Try a longer tee that you can tuck in to create a smoother silhouette or wear a shorter top with a longer sweater.

All of the above tips will help you promote a smoother silhouette, but ultimately, if you're unhappy with the shape of your body, you may need to consider adopting a new weight control plan. Talk to your doctor to find out if you're overweight and develop a diet and exercise plan to help you truly bust those bulges once and for all.
