Best Ways to Pamper Winter Skin

With winter comes dry air, cold temperatures and high winds, a recipe for skin irritation, chapping and dryness. If you're suffering from a bad case of winter skin or simply want to avoid the itching and irritation that is so common during the winter, follow these simple tips and pamper your skin until spring arrives.
1. Pamper Daily. Don't wait for your skin to show signs of winter stress to give it some tender loving care. Skin needs daily moisture throughout the winter months to remain in good health. After you bathe, apply a moisturizer from head to toe. Choose an ointment or a cream, which will provide deeper hydration than a lightweight body lotion. Picking a product with lanolin, dimethicone and other occlusives will lock hydration away and protect the tissue from evaporation. Be sure to apply your moisturizer within 3 minutes.
2. Have a Spa Retreat. If your complexion is showing signs of winter dryness, take some time out for a pampering spa facial. Start off by using a gentle cleanser. A cleansing milk or micellar cleanser is a great choice for the winter months. Next, use a moisturizing mask made with emollients like shea butter or jojoba oil. Let the mask rest as instructed and then rinse or wipe away as directed. Apply a hydrating toner to your skin and finish with your moisturizer.
3. Maximize a Mani. You can give your hands some relief from dryness with an at-home paraffin treatment before your manicure. The moist warmth of paraffin will soothe and comfort the skin. Be sure to apply a rich hand cream or moisturizing ointment after the paraffin treatment and to frequently reapply your hand moisturizer throughout the day.
4. Treat the Lips. Keeping your lips soft and free of chapping throughout the wintertime can be a challenge. Always apply a protective lip balm before leaving the house during the cold winter months. If your lips are dehydrated, look for a hydrating nighttime lip formula to restore moisture while you rest at night.
5. Protect, Protect, Protect. Protection against the winter weather can go a long way for minimizing irritation and dryness. When you go outside, cover as much of your skin as possible with gloves, a hat and a scarf. Even though the days are grey, you should continue to use a sunscreen throughout the winter, as the glare from snow and ice increases your UV exposure. A mineral sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher can help minimize the harmful effects of UV radiation and will be gentle to your stressed winter skin.
By following these five tips, your skin will look and feel better until winter finally thaws. Start researching products now to find the right ones for your pampering winter skin care regimen and special treatments.
