Gel it Out - Lighter Hydrating Skin Care Formulas

When you think of moisturizers, creams and lotions are likely what pops into your mind, as the most traditional hydrating formulas on the market typically come in one of these two forms. Still, not all hydrators are creamy. An increasing number of well-known beauty brands are offering gel and serum-based moisturizers in their lineups, and these products could prove beneficial for women with certain skin concerns.

How Gels Work

Cream and lotion-based moisturizers typically use emollients to hydrate the skin. These oils and butters work to supplement the moisture content of the tissue by adding similar oils to the skin. Gels and serums usually do not contain large amounts of emollients or may not have any in their formulas at all. Instead, these lightweight hydrators use humectants to deliver moisturizing benefits. Humectants draw moisture out of the air and into the skin tissue to rehydrate the tissue instead of adding excess oil.

Why a Gel?

Gel hydrators can be beneficial additions to a regimen for many different skin types. If you have dry skin, using a hydrator in addition to your regular daily moisturizer can provide extra moisture throughout the day or night to alleviate symptoms of dehydration. For combination skin, gel hydrators can help to meet the skin's moisture needs without making oilier regions of the complexion greasy. From gel hydrators, oily and acne-prone skin get the benefit of needed hydration without excess oils that can clog the pores or contribute to shine.

Daily Use Gel Solutions

Some of the gel hydrators on the market are formulated specifically for daily use. An example is SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Gel, which contains the humectant hyaluronic acid as well as the skin conditioner vitamin B5. This product can be used under moisturizer or in place of it and is completely oil free. In addition, the formula is clinically shown to enhance the effectiveness of vitamin C products. SkinCeuticals even offers it along with their signature vitamin C-rich, age-fighting C E Ferulic Gel in a money-saving two-pack.

Gel Moisturizers as Treatments

In addition to daily use gel hydrators, you'll also find products that are formulated as treatments. For example, the Peter Thomas Roth Cucumber Gel Masque uses glycerin to draw moisture in from the skin and also contains cooling cucumber to soothe irritation. The product is intended for soothing and conditioning all skin types and is a popular follow-up for hair removal treatments, facials and other procedures that leave the skin inflamed. Peter Thomas Roth offers the gel hydrator on its own and in a two-pack with their popular purifying Anti-Aging Cleansing Gel, which, like the hydrator, provides benefits for all skin types.

The products discussed above are two of the leading gel hydrators, but there are many others on the market. Do some research to find the ideal product to meet your skin's hydration needs and gel out dehydration once and for all. You can find quality brands like Peter Thomas Roth and SkinCeuticals at many major skin and personal care websites such as, Walgreens.com, SkinStore.com, drugstore.com and Beauty.com.
