Say Farewell to Discoloration with Nia24 SkinCeuticals Decleor and More!

Yesterday was my niece’s 30th birthday so I sent her a little birthday picture text message. Of course I had to comment on the big 3-0 but also couldn’t resist mischievously attaching a little picture of her when she was a baby donning nothing but a little t-shirt with the words “all natural!”

She called back immediately with a “Thanks Aunt! That’s pretty funny!” However, as much as she appreciated the little birthday wish she quickly realized she was talking to Aunt Karen who is not only her wonderful Aunt…but more importantly her wonderful Aunt who knows all about and has beaucoup beauty products! LOL However, I have to say the segue’ was rather ingenious. She very wisely took her new milestone of a birthday and worked that right into her newly found fine lines and dark spots. Her main concern being the latter of the two.

Of course, I told her I would help with her concerns; but couldn’t help but ponder the fact that she mainly wanted the dark spots to go away. I say that because so many people don’t realize that’s virtually the number one concern in terms of anti-aging around the globe. More women are more concerned with discoloration and hyper pigmentation than wrinkles. I happen to be in the minority with the focus of my concern on wrinkles over any of my hyper pigmentation but the facts are that’s not how most women feel. Additionally, I’ve had many men complain about discoloration as well. More men ask me about what they can do about dark circles under their eyes and the spots on the backs of their hands than women do.

Anyway Julie says that the “melasma (she got during her pregnancy 6yrs ago) seems to be creeping back.” I told her that first and foremost sun prevention with a high SPF broad spectrum sunscreen/sun block is key. Additionally she should wear a hat or visor in the sun. However, a visor isn’t enough for many women and girls because the part in the hair can get severely burned and how often do we remember to put sunscreen on our part?

I decided that for Julie a hydroquinone product wouldn’t be ideal even though it’s very effective for hyperpigmentation. But for my little natural (half Italian-half Vegetarian…her self description when she was 6yrs old to a passenger seated near us on a plane) niece, potential toxicity wouldn’t be an option. So I thought of all my favorite skin brightening regimens and specialized discoloration products that were more organic in nature or more of a natural alternative to hydroquinone yet still are extremely effective.

The Miracle of Juara Skincare Banana Avocado Moisture Mask and Kinerase Pro Therapy!

This Sunday (the day after the Fourth of July) I was laying in bed with the worst headache and felt just awful. I even looked worse than I felt! To be honest, it was overindulgence of food and drink (well more accurately just the drink part). I left it on for about ten or fifteen minutes and jumped in the shower. I removed it thoroughly with a wash cloth (I almost always use a wash cloth to remove cleanser, masks, anything really) because I like the cleaner feeling along with the little bit of extra exfoliation I get with the cloth.

Of course I dried off, put my wet hair up in a towel and looked in the mirror and oh man what a transformation! The other night I was watching Confessions of a Shopoholic and it made me sit back and do some finance soul searching of my own. I realized I spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars on beauty products. I don't buy $400 shoes; but I have bought some pretty darn expensive skin creams. So today I thought I'd find some of my favorite all time products that don't cost an arm and a leg and share them with all of you.

I don't even have to ponder my first choice for a fabulous yet inexpensive facial cleanser because I use it all the time and I know it's a great value. It's Gly Derm Gentle Cleanser. The glycolic acid in it will work well for dry sun damaged skin as well as oily blemished skin. So basically it may be used on any skin type. I looked at the customer ratings on SkinStore.com and Gly Derm Gentle Cleanser literally had 18 people who had rated it with the maximum of 5 stars. And it's only 18 bucks!

My pic for a great toner at a great price would have to be H2O Plus Marine Toner. I believe its about 16 bucks.

For an eye product I wanted to choose a multi-tasker because using one product is cheaper than using three. So I found one to work well on dark circles, puffiness and fine lines and wrinkles. I wanted a serum or gel so that it absorbs quickly and gives the eyes an instant lift. I chose Dermelect Line Correction Eye Gel. It retails for under 35 dollars.

For hydration I wanted another multi-tasker. I wanted it to hydrate brilliantly, incorporate effective ingredients that promote cellular turnover and be beneficial for all types of skin including sensitive. And I wanted it to also have sun protection. I went with Aveeno Positively Ageless Daily Moisturizer SPF30. Again, reduced products equates to a bigger savings. And this one is priced ridiculously right at 23 dollars at SkinStore.com. As a matter of fact, Aveeno products are priced right throughout the whole line and work incredibly well.

Want Sensational Skin? Use Treatment Serums!

Today I had a question in my forums about why serums are special and why they are different from creams. I would imagine all of us would like to know if they’re worth adding to our daily regimen.

My best understanding of skincare treatment serum is basically this:
Serums today are usually formulated with concentrated ingredients such as vitamins, antioxidants, hyaluronic acid, and even high tech science ingredients like Marine DNA and tissue nutrients just to name a few. What makes serums different today as opposed to skincare in the past is their delivery system. These potent ingredients can’t do a thing for treatment and repair if they just sit on top of the skin. Today’s better brands have the science to get the little goodies delivered well into the skin to do their individualized specific job. When you add a good serum to your daily regimen you are essentially treating whatever your skin issue is with a target based, indication focused product. Additionally you may be potentiating the work of the regimen you already use. For instance, your day cream may already contain anti-aging ingredients (if that is your focus, but also applies to whatever your specific regimen needs are) but by applying the thinner more concentrated serum underneath your cream you’re getting a boost (sometimes exponentially in my experience) in treatment action. Absorbability is key. If it can’t get in, it can’t work. Having said that there are plenty of times when product on the surface makes sense. You wouldn’t need a scrub to go any deeper (in general) than the scaly superficial layer because you’re basically trying to exfoliate dead skin cells. But when it comes to nutrition for your skin it needs to get into do its work. By the way, for added efficacy use serums on clean and exfoliated skin. However, take sensitivity into consideration as well as use as directed by manufacturer.

So as you can see, my vote goes to the use of serums!
